FAQ

Here will be gathered all frequently asked questions about He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and He-Man the Eternity War from DC Comics.

Last update: December 15th

There is a He-Man comic? Who owns it? I thought it was an 80s cartoon...

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe started out as a toyline by Mattel in 1982. The toys came packaged with their own mini-comics done by Mattel. First regular comics were done by DC Comics.

Later came the animated series from Filmation Studios, as well as STAR/Marvel comic run.

1989 had a new version called "The New Adventures of He-Man" with a toyline and cartoon.

2002 saw the brand with a reboot of toys, cartoon by Mike Young Productions that aired on Cartoon Network/Toonami. And the comic-series done by MVCreations, via Image and CrossGen.

Currently, DC Comics is publishing He-Man comics under license from Mattel. According to interviews, Mattel is part of making the story with DC.

The comics started in 2012 as "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" with a mini-series and became an Ongoing since 2013. The series was re-titled "He-Man: The Eternity War", beginning from December 2014.

What is "Eternity War"?

"He-Man: The Eternity War" is in a way the new name for "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe". Currently there is no more issues coming under "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe".

The comic being released now is He-Man: The Eternity War. Since December 2014 with issue #1.

Originally announced as a "maxi-series" with 12 issues, there is solicitation for issue #15.

Is the Comic Continuing after Eternity War?

Currently "He-Man the Eternity War" storyarc goes up to issue #15, coming out February 2016.

There is sadly no solicitations for March 2016 so we need to wait for more news if the comic will be rebranded with a different title or what the future holds for Mattel/DC.

Is He-Man part of DC Comics' "The New 52"?

No. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe are placed under "Beyond 52 Universe" with DC Comics. So even if Superman and He-Man can meet in these new comics, whatever happens doesn't affect the New52.

In an interview with ComicBookResources, writer Keith Giffen mentioned asking what he can do with a crossover-story. Where accordingly:

And when I talked to [DC Comics co-publisher Dan] DiDio, he said, "I don't care if you cut off Wonder Woman's head. It's not in continuity."
So when reading the crossover-story, it can be thought like an Elseworlds-type of reading. But for He-Man's adventures, the crossover has many answers so it's recommended.

Where should I start reading?

You can check out the Reading Order section.

He-Man: The Eternity War #1 (2014) is one jumping point. The first issue recaps past events to a degree and sets up where things are.

An earlier good jumping point is the Ongoing Series #1 (2013). There they reference all the necessary info from earlier mini-series. Also if you check out the cross-over with DC Universe, that fills in more too that was not covered in said mini-series (2012).
